Excerpt
***** (Sharadian)
The clouds hung heavy midway between the forest floor and the tree tops, haunting yet beautiful. Light attempted to pierce through the eerie blanket, to no avail. Sharadian sat on her perch from above him, her soul torn. If she went to him, he could reject her again. A fate she didn’t have the strength for. If she stayed where she was, and he learned of it, well, his wrath might destroy what was left of her sanity. And if she did nothing… “Tell me how to help him,” she cried with her face toward that persistent light. Silence met her pleas. She deserved more than that. Why hasn’t He sent his guard to lock me away? Her eyes fixed on the Angel who held her heart in his hand. Maybe that was her problem all along. She gave Lars precedence over the Creator. A raven joined her on her perch. “I have failed him in more ways than I can count,” she confessed, swiping at the tears that refused to abate. The intelligent bird turned toward her. Her gifts were not conducive to animals. But the trees were another story. Energy radiated from the branch to her core. Comfort, but something else lingered in the air as the cloud cover thickened. She fought to keep her eyes on Lars, but he disappeared behind the curtain that fell. “Please,” she implored on a sob and lost her hold, falling. Damp, dead leaves stirred as she remained face down in the dirt. Her companion spread his wings, majestic in his black beauty, as she glanced up. “You’ve come to gloat,” she accused. “Watch the Gatekeeper’s fall from grace. Well, you’re too late. But, by all means, go ahead and mock me.” Instead, the bird came closer and cawed. What was he trying to convey? Tell her she was a failure? Aware of all her mistakes, she pushed up to her knees but remained with her face on the ground. A strong flap of wings raised her hair and her gaze once more. “What do you want from me?” she cried. Another caw. “I am sorry. Is that what you need to hear?” She reared back and screamed. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done!” Black eyes searched hers when she finished. No trickery, just intelligence stared into her soul. He hopped forward, bobbed his head, and took flight. She remained on her knees, searching. “Figures. You’re a stupid girl for hoping that was somehow a sign of redemption,” she mumbled to herself. “Negative self-talk only keeps you from doing what you’re supposed to do,” came a voice from behind. She peered over her shoulder. “Laish, I’m a lost cause without a purpose.” “I can’t disagree with you.” he scoffed. “But, Sharadian, I wouldn’t be here if that were true.” She stood and faced him. “You just said you agreed with me.” “I did. I do have my own opinions.” Her eyes widened. “Why are you here?” “To help you fix this epic error you have made,” he affirmed. She shook her head. “There’s no fixing the fact I made a deal with the opposing team.” “Yes, that was a grievous mistake. However, one that can be used for good.” “How?” pacing before she stopped abruptly, “Ohhhhh, you want me to play both sides.” He grinned slightly. “More or less.” “But how can good ask for anything less than honest?” “If you actually think that is what is being asked of you, then you do not understand the meaning of good,” he apprised. “Right,” she sighed. “It can’t. So then…” He stepped closer and placed his hand above her heart. “You must be certain this is not deceiving you.” “Are you asking me to stop loving Lars?” The words alone brought a barrage of tears. “Sharadian, love is not the problem. It never was.” “Then, why?” “You have all the answers, you just don’t want to accept them.” She backed away. “That’s not true.” “But it is.” She wanted to refute him, to rage at his misunderstanding, but she couldn’t. He was right. She glanced up, but he was nowhere to be found. Figured. Once more, she was at a crossroads. If she chose wrong, many would get hurt. If chose right, some still might. There was no easy path. Both were hard and treacherous. She fell to her knees and wailed, “I can’t do this! Do you hear me? I cannot do this!”
